In the last few days, we have been making the pupils and the students of the two schools have an even playground. Our partners.
With the intervention of our partners, ASD Around the Wod and Kenya Wildlife Service, we have managed to level the playfield. The field now has a standard football pitch, netball, volleyball, handball, and badminton. The goalposts are made of metal and reinforced from the inside with concrete. They have nets The junior scholars were not left behind, as we made a swing for them. The playground is also a hub for the youth living in the neighbourhood. There has always been a cordial relationship between the school and the community.
The play on words between World and WOD (an acronym for workout of the day) is a clear reference to everything that revolves around training and sports in general. The mission of ASD Around the Wod is to share and spread the practice of outdoor sporting activities that revolve around functional training. They mainly deal with disciplines in close connection with nature, particularly hiking, OCR (Obstacle Course Race), trail running, parkour, and yoga. The basic idea is to bring together under a single project elements that are closely related to each other, such as hiking, outdoor training, and the environment.
Human-Wildlife Conflict
We share the same approach to reaching the community on issues of conservation of flora and fauna. We enlighten the community to minimise the “human-wildlife conflict.” In places where there are incidences of poaching, the children become our ambassadors. Game meat, logging, and herb harvesting are the main challenges that we deal with. However, there are sustainable practices that are encouraged, like beekeeping.
We create platforms for communities and KWS to mingle in a friendly environment. By doing so, the bond created through mutual understanding yields better results. The community gets an ownership feeling and forges ways of conserving.
Provision of modern lockers to Kanyonga Primary School
The Kanyonga Primary School is an ordinary public primary school located in Embu County, Mbeere South district, Makima zone, Mbeere South sub-county, and Makima ward. It is close to Mwea National Reserve. The generosity of our partners, ASD Around the Wod was felt at Kanyonga Primary School when we donated forty (40) sets of lockers. This is an upgrade to the previous desks that had seen at least three generations of learners. Most of them were in irreparable condition. It was an economic relief to the poor parents and a comfortable learning environment for the pupils.
Scheduled projects.
We are in the final stages of rehabilitating their water tank, which also serves the local homesteads around it. We are also going to level their playfield and install up-to-date amenities. They will have standard pitches for football, netball, handball, and badminton.
We are also contemplating giving the learners shoes, and for the very vulnerable, we dress them in school uniforms. We noticed that pupils in lower grades are the hardest hit. In so doing, we hope that we are reaching out to the vulnerable.
