The 3-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Safari plus Lake Kivu is the perfect short safari to spot gorillas in their natural habitat. Take in Rwanda’s stunning scenery over a short spell. This tour combines the ultimate gorilla trekking, the highlight of a Rwanda safari. A wonderful relaxation time at Lake Kivu, which is one of the most beautiful lakes in Central Africa.
There are only about 1063 mountain gorillas remaining in the world. Rwanda is one of the only three countries, including Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC, where you can see them in their natural habitat in the Virunga Mountains. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is easy to access as the park is located 2½ hours from the capital, Kigali, a city that is punctuated by excellent infrastructure, a breath-taking landscape of rolling hills, and a stunning backdrop of the Virunga Mountains, which host the phenomenal mountain gorillas. Currently, Rwanda has 10 gorilla groups that are habituated for tourism.
Day 1: Kigali – Volcanoes National Park
Pick up from Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes National Park, home of the endangered mountain gorillas. This is about a 2½hour drive from Kigali city to Musanze province. Check in to your lodge in Ruhengeri for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking and transfer to Lake Kivu
After an early morning breakfast, you will be transferred to Kinigi, the park headquarters, for a briefing about the endangered mountain gorillas. Armed with your trekking gear, drinking water, and packed lunch, you will be dropped off at the starting point. In the company of ranger guides, you will track the primates. This activity may take between 2 and 7 hours to search for the gorillas, depending on their location and movement. However, meeting them is so rewarding, and you will spend one (1) hour with them as you take time studying them and taking pictures and videos.
The driver will be waiting at the base to transfer you to Gisenyi for about two (2) hours. Relax at the shores or enjoy swimming, the splendid view of the lake, the mountains, the islands, the fishing boats, reading a book, sun-basking and the breeze. Enjoy views of Nyiragongo Volcanoes in DR Congo. Dine and stay overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: Boat trip and return to Kigali
After breakfast, you will embark on a boat ride and visit the local fishing villages. Return to the shores and have lunch before driving back to Kigali. Dine and stay overnight in a hotel.
Options are, of course, many and varied, and in many cases, we can be flexible about the itinerary for accommodation facilities and the extension of the safari destinations.
