Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is easy to access as the park is located 2½ hours from the capital Kigali, a city that is punctuated by excellent infrastructure, a breath-taking landscape of rolling hills and a stunning backdrop of the Virunga Mountains which host the phenomenal mountains gorillas. Currently, Rwanda has 10 gorilla groups that are habituated for tourism.
Day 1: Kigali – Volcanoes National park
Pick up from Kigali and transfer to Volcanoes national park – home of the endangered mountain gorillas. This is about a 2½hour drive from Kigali city to Musanze province. Check in to your lodge in Ruhengeri for relaxation, dinner and overnight.
Day 2: Gorilla trekking and transfer to Lake Kivu
After early morning breakfast, you will be transferred to Kinigi – the park headquarters for a briefing about the endangered mountain gorillas. Armed with your trekking gear, drinking water and packed lunch, you will be dropped off at the starting point. In the company of ranger-guides, you will track the primates. This activity may take between 2-7 hours searching for the gorillas depending on their location and movement. However, meeting them is so rewarding and you will spend one (1) hour with them as you take time studying them and taking pictures and videos.
The driver will be waiting at the base to transfer you to Gisenyi about two (2) hours. Relax at the shores or enjoy swimming, splendid view of the lake, the Mountains, the islands, the fishing boats, reading a book, sun-basking and the breeze. Enjoy views of Nyiragongo Volcanoes in DR Congo. Dine and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 3: Boat trip and return to Kigali
After breakfast, you will embark on a boat ride and visit the local fishing villages. Return to the shores and have lunch before driving back to Kigali. Dine and overnight in a hotel.
Options are of course many and varied and in many cases, we can be flexible about the itinerary for accommodation facilities and the extension of the safari destinations.
