Overview.

Located in Embu County, Mbeere district, these open savannah grasslands are dotted with small hills with bushy vegetation scattered with acacia and baobab trees. The river lines have thick undergrowth. The confluence of the river Tana and the river Thiba. Two of the “Seven Folk Dam” hydroelectric dams—the Kamburu dam and the Masinga dam—have formidable biodiversity.

Attractions include elephants, giraffes, zebras, lesser kudu, buffaloes, bushbucks, waterbucks, bush pigs, warthogs, monkeys, baboons, impalas, hartebeests, and duikers.  The carnivores include jackals, genet cats, hyenas, and the occasional leopard. The small unsung animals include rock and tree hyrax, mongoose, tortoise, porcupine, and squirrel. The hippos, crocodiles, and some reptiles are also residents here. The area has been recognised as an IBA (important bird area), with over 200 species recorded.

The reason for this is because of its location, which is rarely visited by tourists; consequently, you will find it a place of calm and tranquilly, enabling you to view the reserves with plentiful wildlife in perfect peace.

Game viewing, boat rides at the Kamburu Dam, walking (walking circuit), and hippo sighting at Hippo Point are the key highlights of the reserve. Once at the park, one can take a boat ride on the Masinga and Kamburu dams, which is fun and fantastic.

Program:

Day 1:  Meet in Nairobi city centre at 7:00 a.m. and drive through Thika Road to Makuyu, Makutano, to the VI Karaba, a small roadside market. We take the Karaba-Makima road to Mwea national reserve. We embark on our game drive, having lunch at the Hippo Pool. In the afternoon, we explore this expansive gem. Fly fishing can be done in the evening. Dinner and overnight at the campsite.

Day 2:  Breakfast is served, and we embark on either a nature walk or a game drive. The boat ride can be organised separately to explore the Kamburu dam. After lunch, we head to Masinga Dam on our way back. We drive through Kanyonyo, Matuu, Kilimambogo, and Thika. Finally, arrive in Nairobi in the early evening after completing an overnight stay in Mwea National Reserve.

Options are, of course, many and varied, and in many cases, we can be flexible about the itinerary for accommodation facilities and the extension of the safari destinations.
